The letter written in 1998 by Ms. McCarthy details her close relationship with Jack, Joe Jr. and sister Kathleen, it further details her being sent away to boarding school and her sadness in having been sent to Madames of the Sacred Heart Boarding School, JFK corresponded with her explaining he was none too happy of his location either, two paragraphs read, " Jack Kennedy was in the Solomon Islands at the time where he commanded a PT Boat during WWII. His service in the South Pacific on the PT-109 made us very proud of him. Upon hearing of his little cousin's dislike of boarding school, Jack sent me the PT patch from his uniform including it with a letter. He told me to wear his insignia on my school uniform and urged me to show courage. He reminded me about his current location and ended the note with the words "Mary, be brave little Kiddo, I am not so thrilled about where I am either". The patch is period correct, it is an unauthorized patch worn by enlisted crewman on the dress blue uniform on the left sleeve above rank insignia, beneath the patch a brass plaque describes this patch as being worn by Kennedy, it was clearly owned by Kennedy and it is documented they were often given as gifts, but being an officer, it would not have been worn as it is strictly an Enlisted patch only. COLT SAA .45 REVOLVER & LETTER FROM JOHN KOPEC
Item number: 17665817 | Civilian-issued Colt Single Action Army .45 caliber revolver, with signed letter indicating evaluation by renowned Colt expert John Kopec. 7 1/2 inch barrel, with walnut grips. The letter "C" is oddly missing from the one line Colt barrel address. Gun is accompanied by a letter from John Kopec stating that after receiving and looking over the gun, he could not offer "official" authentication, as it was a civilian issued, and not US Military issued Colt, and he only authenticates Military SAA's. This however is followed by a description of some observations and findings of Mr. Kopec while the gun was in his possession. He found that the revolver was originally fitted with the "Eagle & Shield" ivory grips, and an 1880's style belt and holster; it does not have a factory record; "C" is missing from "COLT'S" in barrel address. He then goes on to compliment the gun as a "very nice representation of an early Colt Peacemaker". Both gun and letter add a distinct and unusual conversation piece to an accomplished Colt SAA collection. Caliber: .45 Serial #: 100978 This lot has a reserve.
